PRINCETON ACM / IEEE COMPUTER SOCIETY CHAPTERS
SPRING 2000 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR

XML for Applications

Saturday, April 8, 2000
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Sarnoff Corporation Auditorium, Princeton, NJ
Cost: $90 (Princeton ACM/IEEE-CS members), $100 (non-members)

XML -- the Extensible Markup Language -- is rapidly becoming one of the most widely used formats for transferring structured data between applications. XML is a format for Web-based data communication: it is more powerful and more expressive than HTML. XML represents more than just "display formatting" for Web applications. XML can be used to define data structures that can be fed to a variety of applications.

Although XML is simple in concept, XML's capabilities permit great diversity and creativity in implementation. This seminar will serve as your introduction to XML with particular emphasis on application programming. After covering the origins and fundamentals of XML, the seminar will progress to examining some common XML scenarios. These include "B2B" (business-to-business) e-commerce and application integration. Finally, you will be introduced to the more common tools and technologies for using XML in applications, with primary focus on Web development.

Steve Mohr is a senior software systems architect with Omicron Consulting. He designs and develops systems using C++, Java, JavaScript, COM, and various internetworking standards and protocols. Steve holds BS and MS degrees in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His research interests include distributed object-based computing and the practical applications of artificial intelligence.
